Dear Northeast Middle families,
Happy Super Bowl Sunday! We are hopeful that warmer weather returning this week will allow outdoor recess to continue. I want to begin by congratulating our Spelling Bee winner, Sana, and our runner up, Manvik. They worked through nearly 200 words to earn the championship. Well done to all scholars who participated in the Spelling Bee.
As we move through February, scholars may need extra reminders around expectations. On any given day, 98% of our scholars meet expectations, and we are proud of that. We also recognize that middle school scholars are still learning, make mistakes, and are figuring out who they are as people. Consistency and clear expectations help them grow. We want to take a moment to both recognize the many scholars who consistently model our Viking Values and provide a few friendly reminders for all scholars.
Scholars are expected to keep hands, feet, and objects to themselves, use appropriate language and noise levels, respect personal space, walk in the hallways, and follow adult directions. If an issue arises, scholars should walk away when possible, keep moving, let an adult know, and/or complete an incident report. Scholars are also expected to engage in their learning so others can learn, take care of our school and restrooms, support their peers, and do their best work while taking responsibility when mistakes occur.
We all want Northeast Middle to remain a place where scholars grow, learn, and thrive. Middle school comes with road bumps, but when we work together and hold ourselves accountable, our scholars succeed.
We are now in the fifth week of the semester, and grades are beginning to take shape. It is important for scholars to keep up with assignments and be proactive with tests, quizzes, and papers by preparing ahead of time and asking for support when needed.
A few upcoming reminders. Our PTO meeting is Tuesday at 5:30p. Wednesday is our school wide field trip. Scholars will be released at 12:20p on Thursday, and there is no school on Friday due to professional development.
Have a great week ahead, and thank you for your continued partnership.
Your Partner In Education,
Kevin

School Wide Field Trip
We are excited and looking forward to our annual school community building event on Wednesday as we attend the SLU Women’s Basketball game. This is one of the highlights of the school year for our scholars and a great opportunity to come together as a school community, support a local team, and build relationships beyond the classroom.
A few friendly reminders for the day. All scholars should wear their provided shirt, which will be distributed during Character Time (CT) on Monday. Lunch will be provided for all scholars at the arena. Limited concessions will be available, and the venue is cashless. Scholars are expected to represent Northeast Middle by demonstrating our Viking Values through their actions and interactions throughout the event and on the bus. We anticipate returning to school around 1:30p. As a reminder, there are no refunds for this event.
Thank you for helping make this a positive and memorable experience for our scholars.

Dear Northeast Middle families,
Thank you for your patience and flexibility with the two recent snow days. It appears it may be a brutal winter ahead.
We are looking forward to our school wide event at SLU Women's Basketball on the 11th. This is an exciting opportunity to build community and celebrate our scholars together. Scholars may purchase items at the concession stands, if they choose. Please note that SLU is a cashless venue. Scholars have already selected their lunch option for that day. However, scholars with food allergies are welcome to also bring a sack lunch with them (it should be a small bag due to the venue restrictions).
Our 6th grade mixer is this Wednesday after-school until 4:30p. Scholars should sign-up on Flex! Snacks will be available for purchase for $1 or $2.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Thank you for your continued support.

Dear Northeast Middle families,
Happy Sunday. It has certainly been a cold week, to say the least. It is hard to believe we are already in our last full week of January and that February is just around the corner. With only 16 weeks left in the school year, the time will move quickly. We truly appreciate your continued partnership as we move through these important months together.
Thank you to the families who were able to support our Red Robin fundraiser on Wednesday in support of the PTO. Your involvement makes a meaningful difference for our school community, and we are grateful for that support.
We would also like to share a few upcoming dates. Our 6th Grade Mixer will take place on February 4 after-school (sign-up today on Flex!), and the next PTO meeting will be held on February 10 at 5:30p.
Scholars should have signed up for their next round of Enrichment, with sign ups closing on January 27. The next Enrichment cycle will begin on February 4. If you have any questions regarding Enrichment or upcoming events, please do not hesitate to reach out.
It was also wonderful to celebrate nearly 600 scholars who achieved their NWEA growth goals last week during lunches as well. In addition, we had over 130 7th grade scholars qualify to apply to the National Junior Honor Society.
Thank you for your continued support.

Dear Northeast Middle families,
This is a reminder that there is no school tomorrow in observance of the MLK holiday. We hope our scholars and families are able to enjoy the long weekend.
Scholars will begin selecting their Quarter 3 Enrichment courses from January 22 through January 27 during Learning Lab. Offerings may be found on the Scholar HUB or by visiting here. The next round of Enrichment will begin on February 4. This quarter, AcLab will generally take place on Tuesdays and Enrichment generally will be on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. This shift is intended to allow scholars time at the start of each week to focus on classwork and homework completion during Learning Lab.
We also want to share exciting news connected to our CSIP goals related to NWEA. There is much to celebrate with our scholars and their teachers. Based on Winter NWEA results, we have exceeded our growth goals in all three content areas. In many grade levels and subject areas, our scholars demonstrated the highest growth among Parkway middle schools.
This is a significant accomplishment and a reflection of the consistent focus, strong instruction, and commitment to excellence across our school community. Congratulations to our scholars and staff for their hard work thus far. We look forward to continued success as we move through the remainder of the school year.
Thank you for your continued partnership and we look forward to seeing the scholars on Tuesday! Please don’t forget to complete the school wide field trip form on Infinite Campus.

Dear Northeast Middle families,
Welcome back from winter break, and happy 2026. I hope your family enjoyed a restful break and that the new year is off to a strong start. We are excited to welcome our scholars back and to continue building momentum together this semester.
As we begin the new year, I want to share an upcoming school wide experience we are looking forward to. Our entire school will be attending a field trip to support SLU Women’s Basketball. Our goal is 100% participation, as this experience is about more than the game. It is an opportunity to strengthen school community, build shared memories, and show our scholars what it looks like to come together in support of others.
I also want to remind families that there is no school this Friday or the following Monday. All scholars met with their grade-level principal this week to review expectations, celebrate NWEA success, and set some goals for the semester ahead.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support. We are grateful to work alongside you as we support our scholars in both learning and growth.

14 December 2025 - Viking News
Dear Northeast Middle families,
Thank you again for your support with our scholars and PTO during the PTO snack day last week. It was another strong turnout, and the funds raised help our entire school community.
This time of year is a full one with concerts and performances, and our scholars continue to amaze us with their talent and hard work. As we wrap up the semester and finish NWEA testing, I want to share a quick update. Reading (ELA) is nearly complete, and close to 65% of our scholars have already met their NWEA goal from fall to winter. We look forward to sharing more about our progress on our school goals in January.
I am grateful to our teachers and scholars for their resilience and responsibility throughout this stretch of learning. They continue to show up, try their best, and take their work seriously.
We are down to the final week of the semester. There are still several important deadlines for scholars to finish, and we also have a spirit week ahead to celebrate the close of the semester. Let's finish strong and enjoy the energy this week brings.
I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season, and a happy new year. We look forward to seeing everyone in 2026!

7 December 2025 - Viking News
Dear Northeast Middle families,
I hope you had a restful Thanksgiving break. Now that we are officially in December, the winter weather has arrived. Please make sure scholars are dressed appropriately for the cold. If they forget an item (because they are middle schoolers :) ), encourage them to check lost and found. Remaining items are donated each month. If you would like us to look for something, feel free to email Mrs. Thien (cthien@parkwayschools.net).
We now have ten (10) days left in the semester before grades are finalized. Many scholars still have missing assignments, as well as upcoming quizzes, tests, projects, and papers. You should be hearing from teachers about any major deadlines between now and the end of the semester. As a reminder, Wednesday is a half day, and scholars are released at 12:20p.
December is always a full month, and it is a great time to see our scholars shine in so many events and performances. Last week, many of our scholars completed their winter NWEA Reading assessment. It has been encouraging to see their focus and the growth they are showing at this point in the year.
Thank you to our 8th grade families for your flexibility with 9th grade curriculum night. Scholars will select their high school courses with the North High counseling team on Monday. For our 6th and 7th grade scholars and families, please take some time to review the Course Request Handbook for 2026-2027. Scholars will make their selections on Monday, January 5, 2026, during their PE class with their counselor.
As we move through these final weeks of 2025, it is hard to believe how quickly the semester has gone. Thank you for your partnership and for working with us to support scholars as they strive for excellence.
Your Partner In Education,
Kevin

Security Department Review
This fall, Parkway Schools is conducting a targeted review of our Security Department. As part of this process, the District is gathering input from parents. Please help our Security Department by taking a few minutes to participate in this survey, allowing us to consider your voice.
School Appropriate Language Reminder
This is a friendly reminder about using school appropriate language. Our goal is to create an environment where every scholar feels safe and welcomed. There are phrases, jokes, names, and comments that may seem acceptable with friends or family but are not appropriate in a school setting or on the bus.
It is important to understand that this type of language is a violation of Parkway Schools Board Policy. A first offense may result in a Superintendent Suspension, which ranges from 11 to 180 days out-of-school suspension. This includes language directed at or based on gender, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, ancestry, disability, or any other characteristic protected by law. Examples include racial jokes or comments, graffiti, name calling, or threatening or hostile acts tied to protected characteristics.
We want to remind scholars and families of these expectations so we can all work together to maintain a positive and respectful environment. If a scholar experiences anything that falls into this category, please complete an incident report. The link can be found on the Scholar HUB or on the Northeast Middle website at NortheastMiddle.

Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP) 25-26
Each school year, schools write a CSIP, which is the roadmap we use to guide our work and is required in the state of Missouri. It outlines our goals, strategies, and actions that will help improve learning and overall school success.
Essentially, it explains what we want to accomplish, why it matters, and how we plan to get there. It includes goals for academics, attendance, school climate, and support systems for scholars. We track our progress and make adjustments when needed.
For the 2025-2026 school year, our CSIP goals are:
- The percentage of scholars scoring average or above on their Spring NWEA will increase to 65% in math, 69.5% in reading, and 70% in science.
- The percentage of scholars meeting their NWEA growth goal will increase to 50% in accelerated math, 47% in math, 50% in reading, and 55% in science.
- The disparities in achievement between all scholars and scholars in the state-defined “student group” decreases to 44% in math, 35% in reading, and 37% in science.
- The percentage of scholars who will meet their growth targets in math, reading, and science from fall to spring will increase to 25%.
- The percentage of scholars who report a strong sense of belonging will increase to 60%, and the percentage of staff who report positively that scholars respect them will increase to 70%.
- The percentage of scholars who participate in at least one activity or program in order to build a stronger connection with the school community will increase to 75%.
Here is a progress update for the areas that we have thus far:
- Attendance: currently, 91% of scholars are attending school at least 90% or higher of the time
- Fall NWEA Academic Achievement: 62% in math (goal: 65%), 68.7% in reading (goal: 69.5%), and 66.2% in science (goal: 70%)

9 November 2025 - Viking News
Dear Northeast Middle families,
We made it through another busy week...and survived another full moon week! Apparently, it was the Beaver Moon, which may explain some of the extra energy in the building. Thank you for helping your child stay focused and supported during this time of year with the daylight changes.
A huge thank you to all families who attended parent/teacher conferences. Your participation makes a real difference in supporting your child's success. It was wonderful to see such a strong turnout and the meaningful conversations that took place. We will be sending our next in-progress report next week.
Our fall musical, James and the Giant Peach, Jr., was another highlight! The scholars did an amazing job, and it was great to see so many families enjoying the performances. Thank you for supporting the arts and celebrating their hard work.
We are looking forward to the PTO Trivia Night, which is sold out. Don't worry, even if you can't attend, you will be able to participate in the amazing silent auctions that will be taking place.
We also are looking forward to celebrating our Veterans on Tuesday with our annual Veterans' Day breakfast and parade. We are excited to share that over 100 people have signed up to attend this special event as we honor the service and sacrifices of our veterans.
Winter NWEA testing is quickly approaching, and it is important that scholars continue to put their best effort forward. Each scholar has a goal from the fall NWEA in ELA, math, and science, and you should be able to ask your child about their goals. These goals have been reviewed and reflected on with each of their teachers. Our continued emphasis is on growth, and we are looking forward to seeing significant progress from every scholar. Testing will begin on December 2nd.
For our 8th grade families, please make sure you review the class update that was sent on November 6th.
As a reminder, if your child wishes to ride a different bus home, both families must contact Mrs. Carla Thien (cthien@parkwayschools.net) by noon each day for permission.
Wednesday is a half day with early release at 12:20p. No lunch is served.
Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting our scholars' learning and growth.

Two pieces I wanted to clarify. The North High Curriculum Night is on Tuesday, December 2nd - 6:30p-8p. The North High visit is December 18th and not 14th. Sorry for any confusion.

Dear Northeast Middle families,
What a week it has been. We kicked off Red Ribbon Week on the 24th, and it has been full of energy and activity ever since. Our scholars really showed their school spirit and commitment to the theme, "life is a puzzle, solve it drug free."
We also enjoyed band concerts, field trips for our seventh and eighth graders, and several fun contests. If you would like to see a few highlights, take a look at our school Facebook page.
With the federal shutdown, we know some families may be feeling added pressure right now. Information about the district food pantry is included below. If you family has been affected, please consider applying for Free and Reduced Price Meal Benefits as well. We are here to support.
We are also getting ready for our next round of Enrichment. Scholars will begin choosing their Enrichment session on Monday during Learning Lab. You will find the offerings and our selection process by visiting here.
A quick reminder that there is no school Tuesday due to Election Day. Our fall musical takes place Friday and Saturday, and we hope to see many of you there to support our performers.
Enjoy the extra hour of rest this weekend with daylight savings. Have a wonderful week ahead.

7 October 2025 - Viking News
Dear Northeast Middle Families,
I apologize for the delay in this edition of the Viking News. The system the district uses has been down Saturday. They were hoping it would be back online sooner, however, it still is not. This also impacts your ability to access the Parent Connect app.
Below is the email that you were supposed to receive on Sunday, October 5, 2025, at 1:17p.
Hopefully the fall weather will be here before long. With the change of season, we have a few important dates coming up. Fall Break will be a little shorter this year, with a half-day of school on Friday, October 17, and no school on Monday, October 20. The new quarter will begin on Tuesday, October 21. Parent-Teacher Conferences are just around the corner on Monday, November 3, from 4p-8:45p. Conference sign-ups will open in the October 12 edition of the Viking News. If those times don't work for your family, please reach out directly to your child's teachers to schedule a phone call or virtual meeting during the week of November 3.
With the first quarter ending in just two weeks, we want to celebrate some of the great work happening at Northeast Middle! Over 400 scholars currently have ZERO missing assignments for the quarter, nearly 600 scholars have Cs or higher in all of their core classes, and nearly 91% of scholars...around 820...have 90% or higher attendance so far this year. Strong attendance helps scholars learn more, complete their assignments, and achieve at higher levels.
Last week, families should have received their child's NWEA scores from the district. This data point helps both families and our teachers understand where each scholar is performing and whether extra support may be needed. Throughout the year, we set growth goals from this baseline to winter and spring.
Our first cycle of Enrichment has concluded, and we heard many positive comments from scholars. The next Enrichment cycle will begin on November 18, and we will seek feedback after that cycle.
Finally, thank you for your continued support of the PTO. Our first PTO Snack Day of the year was a huge success, and we appreciate all the families who helped make it possible. Please take a moment to read below two important updates for the second quarter.
Enjoy the season, and as always, don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or feedback,
Kevin

Picture Retake Day!
Picture Retake Day is on Tuesday, October 14th, in the afternoon. In order to retake your school picture, a picture package must be purchased. Scholars will need to bring their picture package back with them or if they ordered after, the order receipt. If they don't have either item, they won't be able to retake their school picture.
Clothing Donations Needed!
Nurse Kelsey is in need of clothing items for scholars throughout the day. Specifically, she is looking for t-shirts, pants, and gym shorts. All sizes and genders are in need. If you have any clothing items you would like to donate for scholars to use throughout the school day when something happens, please drop them off in the Welcome Center or with Nurse Kelsey.
New Chromebook Music Policy Starting October 21st
Technology is a powerful tool, and part of our role is to help scholars learn how to use it appropriately. At the same time, we recognize that it can sometimes become a distraction. Our school goal is already to ensure Chromebook's are not used more than 40% of the school day. While some scholars may feel they can listen to music and focus on instruction at the same time, we have found this is not the case for most.
Beginning in the second quarter, we will be adjusting our Chromebook and music policy to help ensure scholars remain focused and make the most of their instructional time. Starting Tuesday, October 21, scholars will no longer be able to listen to music through YouTube, Spotify, or other platforms during the school day, unless it is part of an approved support plan.
We have also heard concerns from families about the amount of time scholars are spending on Chromebooks. Our hope is that this shift will help scholars stay engaged, minimize distractions, and make the most of their learning.
Late Work Policy Change Starting October 21st
Starting in the second quarter, we are putting a more consistent process in place for assignments and late work. Teachers will continue to enter assignments each week by Friday and grade them within one week. Scholars will then have up to one additional week (7 calendar days) past the original due date to turn in late or missing work. After this deadline, work will not be accepted for credit unless special circumstances, such as illness, are communicated directly with teachers.
We know middle school is a time when scholars are building executive functioning skills, and clear expectations can help support this growth. Families can also encourage their child to use AcLab during Learning Lab, held four days each week, to complete assignments and get extra support from teachers.
September 2025
28 September 2025 - Viking News
Dear Northeast Middle families,
As we wrap up September and look ahead to just a few short weeks left in the first quarter, I want to take a moment to talk about in-progress grade reports. I know these reports can sometimes bring surprising or even shocking moments. It's important to remember that we are only in week six of the school year. Many scholars have not yet had a major assessment in the gradebook, but those will be coming soon.
For families transitioning from 5th to 6th grade, I also want to provide some clarity. A letter grade of C means a scholar is meeting the state standard and expectations, which means they are on track. A grade of A or B reflects that a scholar is exceeding the standard and expectation.
Academic struggles are normal in middle school, and in many ways, they are an important part of the journey. This is a time when scholars are learning how to develop executive functioning skills, discover how they learn best, practice self-advocacy, and balance both school and outside responsibilities.
Each week, scholars have AcLab during Learning Lab, which provides a dedicated time for scholars to not only complete missing or current assignments but also to get support directly from their teachers. Please encourage your child to start here, if they are needing improvement academically.
We remain committed to helping every scholar. Our teams meet regularly to monitor progress, reflect, and develop solutions to ensure scholars feel a sense of belonging and connection while also making strong academic growth.
At home, one of the best ways to support your child is by setting a dedicated time each week to check in with them, review their Infinite Campus, discuss what they are working on, and encourage them to use the available resources. Small, consistent conversations about school can make a big difference in building confidence and accountability.
We look forward to a continued year filled with success, positive moments, and strong academic growth.
Enjoy the weekend,
Kevin

Dear Northeast Middle families,
I am hopeful that fall weather is finally settling in. With the change in season, scholars are starting to bring extra layers and different clothing items. We are already noticing quite a few items in our lost and found. Please encourage your child to check there if they are missing something. Unclaimed items are donated at the end of each month.
Later this week, I will be sending out our first in-progress grade reports. These reports are meant to give you a snapshot of how your child is performing at this point in the term. We typically send them midway between terms and official report cards to help keep you informed.
Last week marked our first round of Enrichment, and it was wonderful to see scholars so engaged and excited about the different opportunities. Several even commented that they wished it could last all year. If you have feedback about Enrichment during Learning Lab I would be glad to hear from you.
Finally, it was great to see so many parents and guardians at our first PTO meeting of the year. Your feedback, involvement, and dedication to improving our school community are truly appreciated. If you weren't able to make it, there is a PTO update below and the meeting material will be published on our website later this week.
Thank you for your continued support of Northeast Middle. As always, please don't hesitate to share your feedback...both the positives and areas where we can continue to grow.

Dear Northeast Middle families,
We are now entering the fifth week of the school year, and it's a great time to check in on grades. Scholars receive missing assignment emails from me twice a week and have the opportunity to complete this work during Learning Lab.
This week, and continuing through October 2, scholars will be participating in either Enrichment or Support during Learning Lab. Thank you for encouraging your child to stay on top of assignments and take advantage of this time.
It's important that scholars remember KHFAOTY...keep hands, feet, and other objects to yourself. When this expectation isn't followed, situations can escalate quickly. If issues or concerns come up, scholars should complete an incident report through their Google account, and the form may be found on our website.
Don't forget to mark your calendar for our first PTO meeting of the year on September 16th at 5:30p. Also, on Friday, we have Dippin' Dots for sale during lunches for $5 (cash). Enjoy the week ahead, and try to stay cool with this late stretch of summer weather.
Enjoy the weekend,
Kevin

Dear Northeast Middle families,
It was great to see so many families at our 6th Grade Outdoor School meeting last week. The 6th grade scholars had a wonderful time at the Mixer, which was a great opportunity to build connections with their peers.
A reminder that this Wednesday is our first half day of the school year. Please note that lunch will not be served on half days.
Gradebooks are now open in Infinite Campus. You will begin to see grades entered for your child. We encourage you to check regularly, and if you notice missing assignments, remind your child to use their AcLab time to complete them.
We are looking forward to another strong week of learning and growth together. Don't forget to mark your calendar for our first PTO meeting of the year on September 16th at 5:30p.
Enjoy the weekend,
Kevin

PATH Overview...
A student’s physical and mental health can affect their educational, social, and emotional well-being. So it is essential to educate, support, and empower our students about their health. Parkway PATH, Peers Advocating for Total Health, is a teen-led initiative consisting of a series of middle school programs that address these needs. The programs are geared to prevent and reduce student use of alcohol, e-cigarettes, cannabis, and other drugs as well as build resiliency, self-worth, and support systems.
Through age-appropriate lessons, high school role models educate middle school students about the unhealthy consequences of drug use and the benefits of choosing a life of total health. Ultimately, we hope to equip each student to have the attitude to “Learn It, Live It, and Pass It On.”
The programs are:
- Now n L8r An 8th-grade activity-based program that emphasizes the value of making good decisions. During this program, students will understand the value of making healthy decisions and realize the impact peers and social media have on their self-worth.
- Peer Teaching A 7th graders program that focuses on alcohol prevention and shares the importance of good character and its impact on one’s choices to lead a healthy life. The lessons cover a variety of topics including self-worth, resiliency, perseverance, integrity, and responsibility.
- High School Heroes A drug prevention program designed for 6th-grade students that educates 6th-grade students about the harmful effects of vapes and cannabis. The hands-on activities focus on health risks and refusal skills.
The Now n L8r program will kick things off in October. Our HS leaders look forward to working with the 8th graders during their Health/PE classes!

31 August 2025 - Viking News
Dear Northeast Middle families,
We want to take a moment to commend our scholars. They have done a terrific job managing their personal electronic devices and following our Viking Values. In addition, their resilience during NWEA testing has been wonderful to see. We are proud of the resilience and responsibility they continue to show.
This week, after-school activities begin. A reminder, scholars who plan to stay after school must sign up through Flex by 2p each day. It is also their responsibility to notify families of their plans. Please note that activity buses often run slower at the start of the year. With the mixer coming up, we anticipate longer bus runs, so we appreciate your patience. For 6th graders attending the mixer on Thursday, concessions will be available for $1-$2 (cash only).
As we complete our NWEA and readiness assessments, we are using those results along with other data points to identify scholars who may benefit from additional support. Those supports will be provided during Learning Lab in the coming weeks. For other scholars, we are excited to launch Learning Lab enrichment this year, aligned to our school goals. Please review the information below, including our "catalog" of enrichment offerings. There is truly something for everyone....from Painting Sneakers to Walking Club, Taylor Swift to Business Management, Sports Stats to Star Wars. These opportunities allow scholars to connect with their interests while enriching their minds.
Lastly, if any parents are interested in volunteering to coach a girls' basketball team for each grade-level, please reach out so we can help get teams set up through Parkway Rockwood Community Education.
I hope you enjoy the extended holiday weekend, and we look forward to seeing scholars on Tuesday, ready for another great week at Northeast!
Enjoy the weekend,
Kevin

Learning Lab
If you had an older child at Northeast, you may remember a class called COM (Community). Learning Lab is a revised version, designed with a sharper focus on academic support, intervention, and enrichment. The purpose of Learning Lab is to give every scholar a dedicated time for self-directed academic work, structured support, and meaningful enrichment. It ensures that all scholars have the time, tools, and guidance they need to meet their goals and grow.
Learning Lab runs only on block (odd/even) days with two different types of days: AcLab days and Intervention / Enrichment days.
On AcLab days, scholars use this time for independent work, preparing for assessments, completing missing assignments, and checking in with teachers as needed. Teachers actively support scholars during this time, offering help, conferring about progress, and reviewing academic needs. What it is not, however, is unstructured downtime. Nor is it a free period, recess, or a place to play games, watch videos, or socialize...it is a focused space with clear expectations and is on independent PATH.
On Intervention / Enrichment days, some scholars are scheduled for targeted support, based on data reviewed by our MTSS team. For scholars not assigned to intervention, enrichment opportunities are offered. The catalog of offerings can be found here; these were designed to allow scholars an opportunity to explore passions while deepening their connection to our school community. Again, these sessions are structured, purposeful, and designed for growth.
Learning Lab is a time for scholars to take ownership of their learning...whether that means catching up, extending themselves, or exploring something new. It is not downtime, but rather a meaningful part of the school day that supports academic progress and personal growth. Please note for scholars on 6 Inspire, this time will look different.

24 August 2025 - Viking News
Dear Northeast Middle families,
What an incredible first week of school at Northeast Middle! Our halls (and new bathrooms) have been filled with energy, positivity, and the kind of excitement that makes the start of a new year so special. Scholars have jumped right into their classes, showing focus, curiosity, and a strong commitment to rising to our high expectations. We are especially proud of how well they have adjusted to the new personal electronics law...by keeping distractions aside, they've shown maturity and set the tone for a school year centered on learning and connection. Also, special shout-out to our 6th graders who done a terrific job with their lunch pins, navigating the building, and getting on their buses on time.
We've also loved seeing so many smiling faces this week. If you haven't already, check out our Facebook page for the first day of school pictures and glimpse into the amazing start we've had together.
Looking ahead, NWEA testing begins tomorrow. These assessments help give us valuable insight into how we can best support each scholar's learning and growth. This is one data point we will be using to determine who may need some support during our first cycle of intervention during Learning Lab coming up later this quarter.
Please also be sure your child brings their school supplies on Monday, if they haven't yet. If your family needs help with supplies, don't hesitate to reach out...we are here to support every scholar.
Thank you for your partnership and for helping us start the year on a such a high note. Here's to building on this momentum and making the 2025-2026 one of the best years yet!
Enjoy the weekend,
Kevin

Spray tags...
As we start each school year, spray tags remain a popular item among scholars, but they also continue to go "missing." Since these items are personal and not school-related, it is not the school's responsibility to track them down. Our recommendation is for scholars to either keep spray tags at home or make sure they are locked up securely during the school day. We simply cannot spend hours each day searching for these items, as our time must remain focused on supporting learning and scholar success.

17 August 2025 - Viking News
Dear Northeast Middle families,
On the eve of the first day of school, I want to officially welcome you and our scholars back to Parkway Northeast Middle for the 2025-2026 school year. The building is ready, the classrooms are prepared, and the energy from Meet the Teacher and New Scholar Orientation has set a positive tone for what promises to be a terrific year.
Our staff this year has been focusing on "Back to the Basics." That means clear communication, consistency in expectations, and a commitment to ensuring every scholar feels supported, challenged, and encouraged to do their very best. Our staff has been working hard to create welcoming spaces, and our custodians and construction team have gone above and beyond to make sure we are ready for our big opening day, tomorrow!
Tomorrow morning, scholars will receive updated schedules in their Character Time (CT) classes. Please remind your child to bring their Chromebook fully charged each day, leave their Smartwatches at home, and to be ready to engage in the exciting year ahead.
As we know buses were running late during New Scholar Orientation, it is the transportation's department protocol to notify parents directly of late buses during the normal school day routes. We apologize for the delay and have asked transportation to review their protocol to include transition days, as well. Thank you in advance for understanding.
As we prepare for the week ahead, if your child rides the bus, please ensure they are at the bus stop at least ten (10) minutes before their designated time. Our transportation department does an excellent job, but times may vary due to traffic, construction, and assisting scholars. It is going to be hot this week, so please have your child bring a water bottle for their bus ride. Our doors open at 8a. All car riders should be dropped off on the north lot at door #13.
We are grateful for your continued partnership and trust. Together, we will make this school year one of growth, achievement, and community for every Viking! Don't forget to wear purple or Viking gear on Fridays!
Looking forward to seeing all of our scholars tomorrow,
Kevin

Electronic Devices and Cell Phone Policy 2025-2026 ~ Reminder!
As you may know, the Parkway Schools Board of Education adopted a new electronic device and cell phone policy for the 2025–2026 school year this past spring based on the new state law.
To help families and scholars prepare and avoid any surprises, we want to share the key changes now. Starting tomorrow, no personal electronic devices may be used or visible at any point during the school day...from arrival to dismissal. This includes cell phones, smartwatches, iPads, personal laptops, and any other non-school-issued device. It is recommended that scholars put their devices in airplane mode or turn them off completely.
We understand this is a shift, and we want to give families time to prepare. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly. Thank you for your partnership in helping keep scholars focused on learning and their overall well-being.
Bus Expectations and Scholar HUB
The Scholar HUB is a great link to bookmark. It contains all of our policies, procedures, and expectations. Two of the most important things are the incident report system and counselor requests. Anytime a scholar has an issue or concern or witnessed something that doesn't align to our Viking Values, they should complete an incident report. This provides not only documentation but an opportunity for us to follow-up. Also, if a scholar needs to see a counselor, they should complete the counselor request form.
Following bus expectations is essential to keeping everyone safe, and failure to do so may result in a bus suspension...as riding the bus is a privilege. Scholars must ride their assigned bus, and any bus pass requests should be submitted to the Welcome Center by both families by noon and will begin after Labor Day. During the first couple of weeks, buses may be overcrowded as we confirm accurate rider numbers, but we will work with transportation to make adjustments, so please let me know of any concerns.
Scholar Drop-Off and Pick-Up
Doors open at 8a and we ask if you are picking your child up early, please do so by 2:45p. Please do not drop your child off in the morning in the bus only area. Thank you for your assistance!
Best,
Kevin M. Martin, Ed.D.
August 2025 - Viking News
Dear Northeast Middle families,
Welcome to the 2025-2026 school year! As we get ready to open our doors on Monday, August 18th, I wanted to take a moment to provide some quick reminders and updates.
Middle school is a journey filled with all kinds of milestones....some loud and exciting, others quiet but equally meaningful. Whether it's the thrill of a new class, the challenges that build resilience, or the friendships that make each day a little better, every moment counts. And we're committed to making sure each scholar is seen, supported, and celebrated along the way.
You may have noticed quite a bit of construction still happening on campus. Don't worry....everything that is needed for school to open, is expected to be ready in time for Open House and the first day of school. We're excited to show off the newly updated areas soon. These improvements (including those underground that you can't see...sewer drains) are going to make a big difference for our scholars and staff.
Now that the heat wave is over and the final days of summer are nearing, please keep a few important reminders in mind:
- Doors open at 8a and the first class begins at 8:20a. School ends at 3:15p.
- Consistent attendance is one of the biggest factors tied to academic success. We need every scholar here, every day, on time, and for the full day. Every moment of learning counts.
- Phones, smartwatches, tablets, etc. must remain out of sight during the school day. While scholars may bring devices to school, they should be powered off and out of sight from arrival to dismissal.
- No AirPods or earbuds are allowed throughout the day. Instead, scholars should bring wired or Bluetooth over-the-ear headphones to use during instruction with their Chromebook, when needed.
The first official Viking News for the school year will begin on Sunday, August 17th. However, I wanted to send this final summer message as we prepare to kick off another great year together.
We're excited to welcome your family back. Here's to a year full of learning, growth, and moments worth remembering.
Hope to see you soon,
Kevin

July 2025
July 2025 - Viking News
Dear Northeast Middle families,
It is hard to believe July is already here. In just forty-three (43) days, we'll be welcoming our scholars back to school on Monday, August 18th. As the countdown begins, I wanted to share a few important updates to help keep you informed and prepared.
You may have noticed quite a bit of construction happening around the school grounds. Thanks to Prop S and the continued support of the Parkway community back in November 2022, several key projects are underway. We're grateful for patience and enthusiasm as we make improvements both the inside and outside of Northeast. You can check our progress photos on our Facebook Page. As of now, we're on track with everything.
Over the last several weeks, our team has been working hard to prepare for the 2025-2026 school year. At the heart of our work are our core beliefs: relationships matter, each scholar matters, and every moment counts. Guided by our Viking Values (Compassion, Integrity, Respect, Resilience, and Responsibility)...we are committed to creating a welcoming, supportive, and engaging learning environment for every scholar who walks through our doors.
This year, our district-wide focus will center on strengthening our Multi-Tier Support System (MTSS) to help every scholar grow academically, socially, and emotionally. As part of this effort, we're making a shift from Community Time (COM) to a new Learning Lab model.
During Learning Lab, scholars will have about 30 minutes a day, four days a week, to focus on academics. This time will be used for extra support with essential skills and standards, or for enrichment opportunities when scholars are ready to go deeper. Our goal is to meet scholars where they are...and ensure all are getting what they need to succeed.
If you're looking for ways to help your child stay sharp this summer, even a little time each day focus on math fluency can make a big difference. One resource from our curriculum team is available here for extra practice, and old school flashcards in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are always a reliable tool.
We're also proud to share that our character committee and family partners were recently recognized with a 2025 Promising Practice Award from Character.org. Congratulations to everyone involved for this well earned recognition.
You'll find important dates and reminders below.
Until then, enjoy the rest of the summer...and as always, please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions.
Happy Summer,
Kevin

Dear Northeast Middle families,
We've officially entered the last full week of the school year, and it's hard to believe how quickly the year has flown by.
Our scholars did a terrific job during MAP testing. Their focus and effort were impressive, and we're proud of the hard work they put in. We look forward to getting their results. We also want to thank you for your patience during Friday's storm and the delay in bus dismissal. Scholars did an excellent job following expectations and remaining calm during our shelter in place during the tornado warning. Safety will always remain our top priority.
As we wrap up the school year, please know that many scholars will be completing final projects, papers, tests, and quizzes this week. Teachers are sharing any deadlines for any remaining or missing assignments. Please check in with your child to ensure everything is submitted on time.
We look forward to celebrating our 8th graders on Tuesday, May 27th. The celebration ceremonies will be live streamed on our Facebook page for families and loved ones to enjoy.
A very limited number of yearbooks are still available. They are $35 each and payments can be made in the main office (check or cash).
If your scholar is not returning to Parkway Schools next year, please ensure they turn their Chromebooks and charger to the Tech Stop and any library books to the library.
Thank you for your continued support. Let's finish the year strong.

Kevin

Dear Northeast Middle families,
Happy May! We are now down 18.5 school days until the year is over. It is flying by! Please check in with your child and check out Infinite Campus to review your child's academic progress.
Despite the rainy weather at the end of the field trip, our recent Grizzlies baseball game was a wonderful experience for our school community. Scholars, and staff came together in a show of unity and spirit. A special thank you to everyone who participated in our PJs and Superheroes Days in honor of Drew. We are proud to share that we raised over $1,000 to support Drew's family during this difficult time. Your generosity and compassion truly reflect the heart of Northeast.
We'd also like to express our gratitude to our amazing PTO for organizing another successful Snack Day. Our scholars enjoyed the snacks and it was a great way to help raise money for the PTO. Also, thank you to the over 100 individuals who participated in our family skate night last Sunday. We hope it was an opportunity to mix and mingle with other families and scholars.
Our scholars have recently completed their Spring NWEA testing, and we are incredibly proud of their effort and focus. We encourage you to talk with your child about their results, official reports will be emailed in the coming weeks.
MAP testing begins soon. 8th grade will begin on May 12th, and 6th and 7th grades will begin on May 13th. Please help ensure your child is well-rested, brings their charged Chromebook, headphones, a positive mindset, and is ready to show what they know. Your encouragement makes a big difference.
As the end of the school year quickly approaches, we are also taking time this week to show appreciation to the incredible staff who support our scholars every day. Please join us in celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week and recognizing the dedication of Nurse Kluttz and Nurse Assistant Wagner during National Nurses Week.
If you will have a scholar attending Northeast Middle next year, mark your calendar! Open House / Meet the Teacher Night will be the evening of Thursday, August 14th.
Lastly, although it is late in the year, our Kleenex supply has completely run out. If you are able, we would love any donations of Kleenex to carry us through the end of the school year. Thank you!
Thank you for your continued partnership in making Northeast a place where scholars thrive.

27 April 2025 - Viking News
Dear Northeast Middle families,
We’d like to take a moment to honor and uplift one of our own, Drew, a 6th grader at Parkway Northeast Middle and a proud former Bellerive Leader. Drew is a true warrior. He was first diagnosed with anaplastic ependymoma, a malignant brain tumor, in 2019. Despite a courageous fight and recent surgery, a routine scan on November 4 revealed that the tumor had returned, just seven months after it was last removed. At this time, all future treatments are focused on providing Drew with more time, as curative options are no longer available.
Even in the face of this incredibly difficult journey, Drew continues to be his happy, silly self. His spirit remains strong, even as his body faces new challenges. Our entire school community is wrapping around Drew and his family with love and support as they focus on making the most of every moment.
On Tuesday, during our school-wide field trip, we are honored to cheer Drew on as he throws out the first pitch, a moment we know will be full of pride and heart. On Wednesday, we invite all scholars to participate in our second Pajama and Powers Day. Scholars can wear pajamas or superhero capes with a donation of at least $1. All funds collected will be donated directly to Drew and his family to support them through this time.
To learn more about Drew’s journey or to support in other ways, please visit: Join Drew’s Crew
Please continue to keep Drew and his family in your thoughts. He is not giving up, and neither are we.

There are now five short weeks left of the school year. Let's continue to make the most of it. As a reminder, NWEA testing starts this week. Please ensure scholars have their charged Chromebook. For MAP testing, they do need headphones that plug into their Chromebooks.
Have a wonderful week ahead and don't forget PTO Snack Day is this Friday (cash only)!
Your Partner In Education,
Kevin

Help support the Northeast Middle PTO this Friday! Scholars can purchase pizza, candy, chips, or drinks with CASH ONLY for $1 to $2 during all lunches.
Parking Lot Safety Reminders
As we work together to ensure a safe and smooth experience during arrival and dismissal, we want to remind everyone to follow a few important parking lot safety guidelines. Please remember not to cross the double lines at any time, this puts both drivers and scholars at risk. We also ask for your patience when exiting the lot. While we understand there may be brief periods of traffic, it is crucial that drivers remain in their lane and do not go around other cars, especially into the opposite lane. Buses are actively exiting the lot, and scholars may be crossing, making it dangerous for cars to maneuver outside of their designated lanes.
Additionally, please stay alert and drive slowly, as many of our scholars are walking to and from vehicles. It’s essential that we all remain mindful of our scholars’ safety. Our staff is present to help guide the flow of traffic and maintain a safe environment, and your cooperation is deeply appreciated. Thank you for your continued support in keeping Parkway Northeast a safe and welcoming place for all.
Pajamas and Powers Day - This Wednesday!
We are hosting our final Pajamas and Powers Day this Wednesday, April 30th, to show support for Northeast scholar Drew. Scholars are invited to wear their pajamas and favorite superhero accessory (cape, blanket, superhero pajamas, etc.) by bringing in a $1 donation. All money collected will go directly to help Drew and his family. Donations can be turned into their Character Time. Let’s come together as a school and show Drew our strength and support!

Dear Northeast Middle families,
We are down to the final home stretch of the school year, with less than six full weeks of school! It has been a busy couple of weeks and remains very busy with lots of activities. The spring play, 7th grade Zoo day, 8th grade gifted to the Truman Library, Grizzlies game, Music in the Parks, fine arts concerts and show, 8th grade celebrations, and much, much more!
On April 29th, we look forward to our annual school-wide field trip at the Grizzlies Baseball Game. This is a great opportunity for scholars and staff to come together as one school community and this aligns to our annual school goals. As a reminder, scholars will be taking their spring NWEA testing from April 30th to May 2nd. This information helps provide valuable data to help guide instructional supports and measure scholar growth.
Looking ahead to mid May, scholars will participate in the annual MAP/EOC testing from May 13th to 16th. We appreciate your help in ensuring scholars are well-rested and present during these important assessments. Scholars will need their charged Chromebook and headphones that can be plugged in.
Finally, to end the school year, we will have our annual food truck day on May 29th, the last day of school! This has been a tradition and a fun way to celebrate the accomplishments and hard work of the school year. We are extra excited this year that there are no cicadas.
We are incredibly grateful for our amazing administrative assistants: Mrs. Hanson, Ms. Johnson, Ms. Hanvey, Mrs. Thien, and Mrs. Kalkur; who are the heart of Northeast Middle. Their hard work, kindness, and dedication keep our school running smoothly every single day, and we truly couldn’t do it without them! Happy Administrative Assistant Day this Wednesday.

Lastly, Tuesday is Bus Driver Appreciation Day, so please make sure you thank your bus driver! Thank you for your continued support as we wrap up a fantastic school year together!

Dear Northeast Middle families,
Can you believe it? The third (3rd) quarter has come to a close! As we head into the final stretch of the school year, we have a few important updates and celebrations to share with you.
Our Day of Culture was an incredible success! We are so proud of the scholars and staff who participated in showcasing the diversity and richness of the many cultures represented at Northeast Middle. It was a day filled with learning, appreciation, and celebration, and even Hispanic Heritage Dancers during our school-wide assembly.
As we move into the fourth (4th) quarter, please be sure to verify your schedule in Infinite Campus. Grades for the third (3rd) quarter will be posted later this week on Infinite Campus. As a reminder, tardies do not reset. Shoutout to the 541 scholars who have not received a tardy this school year!
A huge congratulations to the over 40 scholars who were recently inducted into the 5th Chapter National Junior Honor Society! Northeast Middle's Chapter of NJHS is the first among the Parkway middle schools. This is a remarkable achievement, and we are so proud of the dedication and hard work these scholars have shown. Thank you to Dr. Marty, Elizabeth F. (North High NHS President), and Ms. Nikodym for participating in the ceremony. Please join us in celebrating their success!

It’s hard to believe, but we have only one quarter left in this school year! Let’s make it a strong finish as we continue to work together to support our scholars in achieving their best. As a reminder, Monday will be a Technology-Free Day, therefore, no Chromebooks are needed.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership. As always, if you have any questions, feel free to reach out. Here’s to a great start to the fourth quarter!

Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) Grade-Level Testing
Northeast Middle between May 12th and 16th, scholars will participate in Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) tests in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science (8th grade only). Information from the MAP gives scholars' parents and teachers an important measure of each child's learning. It also helps your child's school make sure children are receiving a high-quality education.
- How is the test set up?
- As with many other assessments in Parkway, students take the MAP test on computers. Many scholars began taking online assessments in Parkway several years ago. Tests taken online often have more interactive and engaging test questions. To see the system students will use and example questions, please visit https://wbte.drcedirect.com/
MO/portals/mo using the Google Chrome browser and click on the link at the bottom center of the page.

- When will we receive results and how are they used?
- Parents will receive individual student results for ELA and Math prior to the beginning of the following school year. Individual student scores are one piece of information to go along with all the other things teachers and parents know about each child. Overall results are used by your child’s school and district to identify areas of strength and need within Parkway’s curriculum and to make sure we are providing the best possible education for each child.
- How can I help ensure my child is prepared to take the test?
- The MAP tests address learning that has taken place throughout the year, so the most helpful things you can do as a parent are making sure your child is well-rested, well-nourished, and is present during testing times. Your child’s teacher(s) may also have specific test-taking tips or activities to assist students in feeling prepared.
- Whom can I contact if I have questions?
- Depending on your question, your child’s teacher, counselor, or principal may best be able to assist you. You may also feel free to contact Parkway’s assessment coordinator, Carter Snow, by e-mail (csnow@parkwayschools.net) or phone (314.415.7047).

Best,
Kevin M. Martin, Ed.D.

Dear Northeast Middle families,
Thank you for your understanding as we continue to navigate Mother Nature’s ever-changing temperatures. Our scholars did a fantastic job with virtual learning on Wednesday, and we appreciate everyone’s flexibility. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate as we move into next week, with warmer days ahead. It’s hard to believe that March is already upon us!
A huge thank you to everyone who supported the PTO snack day! The funds raised directly benefit various scholar activities, and we appreciate your generosity.
With only 18.5 school days remaining in the third quarter, scholars will continue receiving emails about any missing assignments. By working together, we can help ensure all scholars reach their academic goals. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to their teacher or COM teacher for additional support. Homework help is also available after school on multiple days.
We are excited to celebrate the achievements of our scholars! Congratulations to the 39 seventh graders who will be inducted into the National Junior Honor Society on March 25th, and to the 78 scholars who will be honored at the annual Spirit of Excellence ceremony on Tuesday.
As flu season continues, we are in great need of Kleenex donations. If you’re able to contribute, donations can be dropped off at the Welcome Center. Your support is greatly appreciated!
Wishing you a wonderful week ahead!

Dear Northeast Middle families,
Happy February! We are looking forward to our second semester Mixer after-school tomorrow. Scholars can still up on Flex for the Mixer and bus. We will have concessions available using cash only. Please note that due to a large number of scholars riding activity buses, the routes may be delayed longer than normal drop-off times.
One of our school improvement goals this year, is to ensure scholars feel connected to Northeast Middle through activities, clubs, events, productions, or sports programs. We're on track to meet our goal, with at least 75% of scholars participating in or attending an activity this year! Thanks to scholar interest, we've recently added new clubs and activities. We encourage all scholars to get involved, as research shows that extracurricular participation has a positive impact on academic success.
Last week, you should have received your child's NWEA Winter scores. This information is helpful to provide you big picture of where your child is performing in comparison to others in Reading, Math, and Science. If you have any questions about the data, please don't hesitate to reach out to their teachers, a counselor, or an administrator. We use this information as one of many data points to help identify scholars who may need additional support.
This week, I am looking forward to travel with our Jazz Band as they head to Orlando, Florida. During this learning experience, scholars will engage in workshops that continue to foster their musical skills. With this, the Viking News will return on February 16th.
As a note, on Thursday, February 13th, it is an early release day at 1:15p. There is no school on February 14th or 17th due to the holiday.

Dear Northeast Middle families,
First semester grades are now available on Infinite Campus. As the new semester starts, it is important scholars keep up with their academic work and use AcLab wisely. This designated time allows them to complete work, study for tests, and get extra help from teachers.
Monday, January 27th, will be a Technology-Free Day. Scholars should leave their Chromebooks at home, as all classroom instruction will take place without the use of technology.
Looking ahead, our upcoming school Mixer is scheduled for Monday, February 3rd, and will run until 4:30p. Scholars who wish to attend must sign up through Flex and indicate whether they will need bus transportation or a parent pick-up. Be sure to sign up soon, as space is limited!
Last week, scholars took part in our annual spelling bee. Five scholars from each grade level have advanced to this week’s final school round - best of luck to all participants! Additionally, over 100 scholars, recognized for their GPA and character, were invited to apply for the Northeast Middle Chapter of National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). Congratulations to these outstanding scholars and we encourage them to apply!
With flu and "bug" season upon us, we are still in need of Kleenex donations to help stock our classrooms. If you are interested in donating, please feel free to drop them off in the Welcome Center or have Amazon / Sam's Club / Costco mail them us directly (181 Coeur De Ville Drive, 63141). Thank you in advance for helping to keep everyone healthy.

Dear Northeast Middle families,
I hope this message finds you well. The new semester starts on Tuesday and we encourage all scholars to check Infinite Campus to verify their second semester schedule. The change in semester brings an opportunity for scholars to set new goals, including academics, as all of their grades reset to 100%.
Last week, we learned that the our annual school field trip to the SLU Basketball won't be able to happen this year. In the meantime, we are looking for alternative opportunities, as our scholars have looked forward to this schoolwide event.
We are excited to announce the formation of the Character Advisory Committee, a new initiative designed to actively involve both families and scholars in shaping our Character Education program. As part of this effort, we are gathering feedback on our Viking Values through this survey. Through this, we aim to better understanding how our core values are being embraced and practiced by our scholars. Thank you in advance for your feedback.

15 December 2024 - Viking News
Dear Northeast Middle families,
Winter Break is upon us and this is the last week of school for 2024! We look forward to closing out 2024 on Friday with a half day of school (12:20p dismissal), and have planned several activities. In addition, Principals' Council has planned three (3) spirit days and we hope scholars and staff alike will participate.
As a reminder, the first semester officially ends on Thursday, January 16th. Scholars demonstrated their resilience with the NWEA testing last week and came prepared. We look forward to sharing their more detailed results in the weeks to come. Each scholar should be aware of their own scores, including their winter goal for ELA, math, and science. Anyone who missed one of the sessions, will make it up this week.
If you are interested in joining a virtual parent feedback session regarding the Family Page and parent communication, please let me know. This session will be on Monday, December 23rd, at 11a.
Due to the winter break, the Viking News will resume on Sunday, January 12, 2025! Wishing you a new year and holiday season full of peace and joy!

8 December 2024 - Viking News
Dear Northeast Middle families,
December is already here, and winter break is just around the corner! This also means the first semester is quickly wrapping up, with grades soon to be finalized on transcripts. This week, you will receive the final in-progress report for the semester. We hope these reports help you stay informed about your child’s academic progress and the goals they’ve set.
As a reminder, it’s crucial to ensure scholars are in school, on time, well-rested, and equipped with their Chromebook and headphones—especially on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday this week. During these days, from 9:30a to 11:30a, scholars will take their winter NWEA assessments. These assessments provide valuable insight into your child’s progress toward yearlong standards and curriculum goals, help us identify areas where additional support may be needed, and track growth since the fall. This data is essential and becomes part of their permanent school record, so we encourage all scholars to take these tests seriously.
As the weather gets colder, we still plan to have outdoor recess and PE when conditions allow. Please ensure scholars dress appropriately for the cold. If they misplace any items, remind them to check the Lost and Found in the Great Hall. Items left there at winter break will be donated.
This is also a wonderful time to enjoy some music! Here’s our schedule for winter concerts:
- Monday: Choir Concerts
- Tuesday: 6th Grade Band Concert
- Thursday: Orchestra Winter Concert, featuring the new Cadet Strings class
- Tuesday, December 17: 7th and 8th Grade Band Concert at North High
We’d love to have you join us in supporting our talented scholars as they share their music.
Thank you for your continued partnership, and I hope you have a great week!

Kevin

Family Page Feedback
This year, we started the Family Page based on parent feedback regarding communication between the classroom and families. Particularly, that Schoology is difficult to navigate and assignments labeled in Infinite Campus aren't the same names on Schoology. In addition, the challenge in finding study guides, rubrics, etc. Therefore, we created this resource with the understanding that we would see usage throughout first semester. To date, we have not found this to be useful based on the data / usage and do plan on currently stopping this time consuming practice at the end of first semester. Our goal remains to to have open, timely, and effective lines of communication between the classroom and families. I also want to balance the precious time teachers have. Therefore, if you have any feedback in this area, please email me (kmartin2@parkwayschools.net). This includes if there is something else that you would find more effective, if you love or hate the resource, etc.
7th Grade Families...
We are excited to have the Student Wellness Program at Northeast Middle again. If you are interested in having your 7th grade scholar participate, please see the letter below. If you have any questions, please reach out to the 7th grade counselor, Dr. Pipes, at 314-415-7115 or jpipes@parkwayschools.net.
8th Grade Families...
As a reminder, this upcoming Monday, scholars during PE will begin their course request selection process for high school. We hope the curriculum night last week at North High was helpful, as you talk with your child about their course selections. In addition, on Tuesday, January 14th, scholars will visit North High. Please complete the field trip form through Online Payment System. There is no cost for the field trip. Dear Northeast Middle families,
Thank you for the incredible support in making our Veterans' Day ceremony a meaningful and memorable event. It is always one of my most favorite events of the year. The level of participation helped us honor the bravery and sacrifices of our nation's veterans while instilling a sense of gratitude and respect in our scholars. Together, we created an inspiring tribute that highlighted the importance of service. Special shoutout to our band and choir for their performances during the ceremony.
We are eager to gather your thoughts on how we're supporting your child. Please complete the Parkway Parent/Guardian Survey. Your feedback will help us identify ways to enhance the learning experience for every scholar and family. Scholars have received a similar, optional survey. The survey is anonymous, and your responses are confidential. Parkway will share the results once they're in so you can see how your feedback can help ensure scholar success.
This week, you will be receiving the next in-progress grade report. As a reminder, the end of the semester is already quickly approaching. Keeping up with assignments, deadlines, and using AcLab appropriately is an important step towards academic success.
To highlight, on December 10th, 12th, and 13th will be NWEA testing. Therefore, we ask you to avoid picking-up your child between 9:15a and 11:15a on those days. There attendance during this window is also greatly appreciated, in order avoiding getting pulled from other classes to make-up these tests.
Please consider donating to our annual PTO Purple Envelope Campaign. This is our ONLY fundraiser of the year for the PTO. Currently, we are at $1,300 of our $8,000 goal. Our goal is for every family to donate $10 per child at Northeast Middle! Consider donating today by visiting here.
Lastly, 8th grade families, should have received an email from me last week (Friday) regarding important updates and information pertaining to high school course selection to 8th grade celebration, Six Flags, and ceremonies. If you didn't get that email, please let me know and I will resend it to you.

Letter to the School Community - Service Dog Notice
We want to inform you that there will be a Service Dog in Northeast Middle School assisting one of our scholars. This dog is a highly trained companion for our scholar and is able to assist in many of the routine activities , which may pose some challenges for this scholar. This dog is comparable to a Guide Dog and is included in every aspect of the scholar's life.
There will be information sessions at the school to integrate the Dog into our daily routines. It is important to be informed that the Dog is a working Dog and not a pet while at school. Already, the Service Dog has been a benefit to the scholar, and we look forward to a lot of growth and learning together. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know (kmartin2@parkwayschools.net).
Thank you for your understanding, support, and interest.

Dear Northeast Middle families,
The scholars in the production of Mean Girls, Jr. did a terrific job! Thank you to all who made it possible, particularly, Mr. Gulley, Mrs. Flick, Mrs. Miller, and Ms. Pollien. It was such a great show!
Tomorrow we look forward to celebrating our Veterans' with our annual Veterans' Day Celebration and Breakfast! Be on the lookout for pictures on our Facebook Page.
Good luck to our Cross Country runners, who compete in the district meet tomorrow after-school at South Middle!
Believe it or not, there are only eight (8) weeks left of the semester. At that time, grades will be issued in conjunction with the calculation of a GPA. Therefore, it is important to check in with your child regarding their academic goals they have set for themselves and their current reality of where they are now. There is still plenty of time to make a plan and achieve the goals!
Lastly, thank you for everyone who was able to make parent-teacher conferences last week. If you weren't able to connect with your child's teachers, don't hesitate to reach out to them. We are here to partner with you!
Don't forget scholars are released at 1:15p on November 13th!

Dear Northeast Middle families,
As November arrives, just a friendly reminder that this morning you should have shifted your clocks back an hour and hopefully enjoyed that “extra” sleep. With Daylight Savings Time coming to an end, it means earlier sunsets, and it is important to remind scholars of safety when exiting a bus to always look both ways. Particularly, for our scholars on after-school activity buses, as it will be darker when they are getting home. On the bus, scholars should be mindful of their behavior and it is representative of our Viking Values.
By now, you should be able to access your child’s first quarter grades on Infinite Campus. You will receive an email tomorrow from me with your child’s first quarter grades. For Parent/Teacher Conferences tomorrow (Monday, November 4th) evening, we do encourage you to bring your child with you, but understand that is not always possible. Either way, we would love to see you. Drop-ins are available from 7p until 8:30p. Some times remain for appointments by clicking here to sign-up.
Special shout out to the 214 - 6th graders; 160 - 7th graders; and 149 - 8th graders who had Cs or higher in all of their classes for the first quarter. Keep up the great work and striving for excellence.
As a reminder, we look forward to welcoming families to our annual Veteran’s Day Breakfast and Celebration on Monday, November 11th, at 8:30a until 9:30a. Please use this link to RSVP by Thursday, November 7th.
Lastly, if you are looking for something to do this Friday night at 7p or Saturday at 2p, we would love to have you come see our production of Mean Girls, Jr. Tickets are available for purchase at the door.

Each conference will be only 5 minutes with each teacher. 3:45p until 7p will be by appointment only, and 7p until 8:30p will be 5-minute drop-in conferences. This opportunity should be looked at as a check-in. If you need a longer time to collaborate with your child's teachers, we strongly encourage you to schedule an additional time to meet with them.
For those desiring a re-take or missed the first picture day, will have their pictures taken on October 16th during the afternoon. Scholars desiring a re-take will need to bring back their purchased packets with them in order to re-take their photo.

Megan Meier Foundation Event at West Middle
Nationwide, cyberbullying and teen self harm/suicide are on the rise. The increased access that today's youth have to technology and social media opens the door to this behavior as both the victim and the cause. As parents, it is admittedly difficult to navigate this topic with your child(ren). To help you learn more about this topic and receive tips that can support you at home, the Parkway School District has established a parent event to address this topic. Tina Meier, of the Megan Meier Foundation, will be conducting a presentation at West Middle School on October 29th at 6:30pm. Mrs. Meier will share the the story of her daughter, Megan, along with the devastating effects of bullying, cyberbullying, and suicide. This powerful message will be followed by an audience Q&A that will allow the participants to seek advice and ask questions that could prove to be a powerful experience for all in attendance. For more information, please check out the attached flyer and, if interested in attending, please click here to kindly RSVP.

Dear Northeast Middle families,
Last week, you should have received an in-progress grade report to let you know where your child is academically thus far this school year. If you have any questions about your child's grade, please don't hesitate to reach out to their teachers. If you desire to see the assignments, study guides, etc. the Family Page is a great resource.
As shared by the district, Mr. Jones, and myself last week, we know there is a growing trend regarding social media. I can't emphasis enough the importance of staying involved with your child's social media accounts, if they have one. It truly takes us all partnering together. Based on the survey results, about 1/3 of our scholars don't have a smart phone and of those that do about 2/3 have access to social media but with parental controls.
I am excited to announce that I am a part of a pilot with Meta (Facebook / Instagram). This pilot allows us to have special tools to continue to keep schools safe. Within this pilot, we are providing feedback regarding new tools they are developing for reporting of inappropriate, harmful, and threatening posts and accounts. I am excited to see what comes of this pilot. If there is ever a post or an account you feel fits this category, don't hesitate to let me know so I can report it through this tool.
With Rosh Hashanah approaching (sunset October 2nd until October 4th at sunset), we do ask if your child is going to be absent to please let Ms. Mary Johnson know (mjohnson11@parkwayschools.net
Lastly, if your child is attending a Jr. Viking Football game, we ask them to exemplify the Viking Values and to have proper supervision during their time cheering on their peers. On October 25th, we look forward to our fall pep rally during our first half day of the school year.
Your Partner In Education,

Dear Northeast Middle families,
Last week scholars did a terrific job with their NWEA testing. As the results come in and are finalized, that information will be shared with you directly from the district.
As we are now in the 5th week of school, you will be receiving this week an in-progress grade report to let you know how your child is doing thus far. In addition, you will receive an email with any missing assignments they may have. The goal is for all scholars to have at least 90% attendance throughout the school year. To date, only 79% of our scholars have achieved this with the first four weeks of the year.
Thank you for everyone who was able to attend the Technology Family Advisory Meeting. It was a great conversation. During this meeting there were discussions about having families pledging to wait to give their child a smartphone until at least the end of 8th grade. If you are interested in signing this pledge, please do so here. Let's try to get to at least 50 families to take the pledge.
Shoutout to Mrs. Haggerty and our 6th graders who won the contest for wearing the most spirit wear. Therefore, on Friday, they had the opportunity to duct tape Mrs. Haggerty to the wall.

This includes if they are riding a bus or car rider. Further, we have worked with transportation to update our activity routes and each color is now aligned to an elementary boundary. Scholars have been notified of their appropriate bus. Scholars riding home with a friend or a different stop, need to have parents email Carla Thien (cthien@parkwayschools.net) in the Welcome Center to get a bus pass.

Dear Northeast Middle families,
It was so wonderful to have our scholars back in the classrooms, filling our school with their energy and excitement. The first week back was a fantastic one and we hope the same was true for your child(ren). Throughout the year, we look forward to recognizing scholars and staff who exhibit the Viking Values. When you see someone living out our values, we would appreciate if you recognize them using this form.
The scholars did a terrific job in following the expectations and creating a learning environment that is conducive to learning. I am particularly proud of their continued commitment to following our cell phone free policy. During lunch time, it is worth the noise level to see them all socializing.
For our bus riders, we know many of our buses feel overcrowded. We've been collaborating with our transportation department to adjust bus routes, where possible, to better accommodate our scholars. As routes may change, information will be communicated directly with families and scholars from transportation. Additionally, I want to remind everyone of our bus expectations to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all. If there are issues, please complete an incident report found here.

18 August 2024 - Viking News
Dear Northeast Middle families,
Welcome to the first official Viking News of the 2024-2025 school year! A big thank you to everyone who attended Meet the Teacher night, helping us kick off the new school year with such enthusiasm. It was wonderful to meet so many new families and reconnect with our returning ones. We hope the new format and times made for an even better experience this year, and I welcome any feedback to help us continuously improve.
On Friday, the energy was electric as over 300 scholars joined us for new scholar orientation. It was heartwarming to see so many scholars engaging with one another, free from cell phones. These face-to-face interactions are vital, which is one of the reasons we will continue to be a phone-free school. Socializing is a critical skill, especially during this developmental stage, and we're thrilled to foster this environment. We eagerly await the arrival of all our scholars on Monday to officially begin the school year. Please remember, our doors open at 8:00 a.m. this year.
As we prepare for the week ahead, a few reminders: If your child rides the bus, please ensure they are at the bus stop at least ten (10) minutes before their designated time. Our transportation department does an excellent job, but times may vary due to traffic, construction, and assisting scholars with pick-up or drop-off.
Scholars who arrive late or need to be picked up early should do so through the Welcome Center (door #2, flagpole side). Please note that unless it’s an emergency, the last early dismissal pick-up will be at 2:45p. Attendance is crucial, and every minute counts towards your child's overall attendance percentage.
When scholars come to school tomorrow, they will either get breakfast or head to the Character Time (CT) class. In their CT class we will have a final printed schedule for them. Please note there may have been minor schedule changes since they were posted on Wednesday.
We can’t wait to see your child on Monday, ready to embark on another year of learning and growing together. And don’t forget to wear purple or Viking gear on Fridays!
Your Partner In Education,
Kevin

Scholar HUB
The Scholar HUB is a great link to bookmark. It contains all of our policies, procedures, and expectations. Two of the most important things on the Scholar HUB are the incident report system and counselor requests. Anytime a scholar has an issue or concern or witnessed something that doesn't align to our Viking Values, they should an incident report. This provides not only documentation but an opportunity for us to follow-up. Also, anytime a scholar needs to see a counselor for any reason, they just submit a counselor request form from the Scholar HUB.
Best,
Kevin
